We see the opening video for RAW.

We see Eric Bischoff in the ring as he says that some know him from shows like RAW and his guest appearance on Smackdown last week was a one-time shot, and he says that even he can only provide the most riveting moment in the history of Smackdown only so often. He says that the good news is that he’s back on RAW and he didn’t come alone as he brought the man who made what happened on Smackdown possible, and he introduces Rico who is in the ring with him and Bischoff says that he wants to reward Rico for his hard work by making his debut tonight against Ric Flair. Bischoff says that Flair isn’t the only one who can style and profile and Rico believes in his philosophy which is controversy creates cash, and he says that Rob Van Dam and Triple H will face off at Unforgiven though he won’t leave it at that. He says that both RVD and Triple H will defend their titles tonight against opponents of his choice and he will deal with title pictures if needed, and he says that he won’t let anyone accuse him of providing boring and predictable TV which he will leave to Stephanie McMahon and Smackdown as he tells everyone to enjoy the best show in sports entertainment.

Your hosts are Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Triple H comes down to the ring and says that everywhere he’s been for the last week, he’s heard the same thing which is “RVD” and people are saying he’s going to lose his title to Rob Van Dam, and he says that people are saying he is scared of RVD though he wants to explain something in that he doesn’t sweat RVD. He says that he’s not scared of RVD and everyone has to realize that RVD is not championship material, and he says that RVD got lucky in becoming the Number One Contender and RVD can’t cut the mustard while he can. He says that he’s the greatest World Champion in history and that’s a fact as he has it all in terms of body, the ability, the talent, and the brains, and he says that RVD doesn’t stand a chance against him though what is getting under his skin is defending the title and people chanting “RVD”. He says that’s the disrespect that gets under his skin as he is Triple H and he is the World Heavyweight Champion because he is the Game and he is that damn good, but then Rob Van Dam comes down to the ring and says that he hears Triple H say he’s not concerned about him. He says that Triple H is stressed out and he can feel the tension coming from him as he feels the anger which is a negative energy, and he says that Triple H shouldn’t feel angry unless he’s seen him in the ring and seen all his cool moves which is what he’s all about. He says that’s why the fans love him and that’s the way he is as Triple H says that RVD is amazing as he is right about him being angry, and he says the anger is a gift he’s been given and that’s why he is the World Champion as that anger is why he sells out arenas and headlines PPVs. RVD says that he doesn’t want any misunderstandings and no one is taking away from his accomplishments, and he says that he’s seen him and he’s quite impressed by his abilities in that Triple H has proven he can spit some water. He says that he’s seen him getting his anger out and it’s a nice touch as he mimics him and calls it beautiful, and he says that takes talent and Triple H says that RVD is a funny guy as he sees why the fans love him. He says that RVD is just like them in that he is a gross underachiever and he can make his jokes, but for all his talent and ability he’s not going to amount to a damn thing in this business and the fact is that RVD is not championship material. He says that RVD will never be a World Champion and RVD says that he sees what this is about as he knows the source of his anger, and he says that Triple H is upset that no one is cheering for him though that’s not going to happen because all the fans are busy chanting his name. Triple H goes for a kick though RVD catches it and hits a spin kick as he heads to the back.

1. Rico pins “Nature Boy” Ric Flair with a spin kick at 3:58.

Analysis: We kick off this edition of RAW with a pretty interesting matchup. He pounds on Flair in the corner and whips him into the other corner as he hits a backdrop and stomps on him, and he whips Flair into the corner and splashes him as he whips him into the other corner only for Flair to catch him with a back elbow. He pounds on Rico and knocks him down as he hits a back elbow and stomps on Rico repeatedly with Rico rolling outside to regroup, and he grabs a chair only for Flair to prevent him from bringing it into the ring as he pulls him onto the apron and pounds on him. He hits a delayed suplex back into the ring for a two count and pounds on Rico in the corner as he kicks the chair out of the ring, but Rico catches him with a spin kick which gets the three and he wins the match despite Flair grabbing the rope. The match itself was nothing much as both men did what they could for the 4 minutes they got and put on a basic match. Flair was getting back into a groove while Rico was now trying to find his way on his own, and they had decent chemistry as Rico gets the upset win. The crowd was into the match and Flair, but are not happy when Rico wins. Rico gets the shocking win over Flair and both men move on. Grade: 1

Terri Runnels interviews Booker T, who says that since he was little, the one thing he hated was tests no matter what kind and he remembers French class as he speaks weak French, and he says that his teacher told him it doesn’t make a different if you pass or not as you just need to show up. He says that he will show up tonight and pass the test with flying colors as this test will be taken by the 5-time WCW Champion if you can dig that.

Terri Runnels interviews Ric Flair, who asks what she thinks is going through his mind after losing to someone like Rico as Triple H walks up to him, and he says that Flair is thinking that he’s embarrassed and he was the man at one time as he looked up to him and he can’t believe Flair is a 16-time World Champion. He says that Flair lost to a man who can’t hold his jock and Flair has lost his instincts and guts, and he says that Flair should do everyone a favor and retire while he should as the Ric Flair he sees is pathetic as Flair says that pathetic is walking around with the World Title without earning it and Triple H will never know what he is capable of though Triple H says he does know.

Triple H retains the title over Jeff and both men move on. Grade: 1.5

After the match, Triple H taunts Jeff with the belt until Rob Van Dam runs back down to the ring and hits a spin kick on Triple H, and he goes up top and hits the 5-Star Frog Splash on Triple H as he poses with the belt and we go off the air.

Final Analysis: Overall, this edition of RAW was a pretty decent episode to serve as the final build for the RAW side of Unforgiven. Coming off what was a red hot Summerslam, the build to Unforgiven has been a bit less for RAW and it seems like some of the momentum coming out of the summer was starting to fade. We did have three title matches as Triple H is still the man while Jericho now rules the midcard and the Un-Americans retain their titles, and Rico, Booker, and Kane get big wins, and the matches were pretty standard as it was more about building to Unforgiven while continuing the feud between RAW and Smackdown. 2002 has been an interesting year to this point with some pretty big moments and new faces making their mark, and as we continue through the fall we will see how the year ends. As for this show, it is a pretty decent show and we will see how RAW fares at Unforgiven. Final Grade: C
